This document has now been replaced by Sewage Sludge on Farmland: Code of Practice, and archived. This Code of Practice applies to the use of sewage sludge on agricultural land in the United Kingdom. The Code has been prepared to complement the Sludge (Use in Agriculture) Regulations 1989 covering GB which enforce the provisions of the EC Directive 86/278/EEC, on the protection of the environment, and in particular of the soil, Department of the Environment Document. This document has been archived at the request of the AIC, as it is now considered out of date. Updated guidance is due in 2015. Industry Code of Practice by the Fertiliser Manufacturers Association (FMA) now AIC. It discusses the responsibilities of users and suppliers. Published in 1998. Safe Storage Time Calculator (HGCA Calculator)
The 'Safe Storage Time Calculator' is an Excel spreadsheet that helps predict the risk from mould, germination, insects and mites and gives an estimate of the time in days until these risks become critical. Growers enter the date, temperature and moisture content of a single sample point as soon as grain goes into store and can then update this to see how the number of safe storage days changes.
